Overcoming fatigue failures of lightweight structures with real-time virtual fatigue monitoring

Electrification and sustainability increase the need for making lightweight yet simultaneously durable steel structures. These lightweight structures are also dynamically challenging which together make fatigue failures very frequent issue. To solve these problems, VIIMA project focuses on the fatigue design based on the simulation of operational loads. The primary target of the project is to find solution for fatigue failures by using real-time simulation that calculates loads for specific situations. Out of these loads, a loading history is presented that is later used in the fatigue assessment of a certain application.

As a result of the VIIMA project, a new and validated methodology to assess early-stage fatigue is developed. This brings competence and improves the readiness of capturing sustainability and electrification that are required in current structures. The results are expected to be commercialized primarily as software-based solutions. Additionally, the results can be commercialized by developing new products and service solutions for the NRMM (non-road mobile machinery) sector.

VIIMA project connects two Finnish universities, LUT and Oulu University, as the responsible research units, and three Business Finland Leading companies: Konecranes, Ponsse and Sandvik Mining and Construction. Additionally, VIIMA includes international research collaboration with Austrian and German research groups, and also involves the following export-driven companies: Stalatube, Mevea and Valmet Automotive Ev Power. All six companies are innovative and eagerly seek their own specific solutions for gaining competitive advantage through green transition and sustainable development.
